Fun Fridays...my favorite things

Alternative English Muffins
from the Western Bagel Co.

Does a cowboy riding into town on a BAGEL seem a little odd?

Not if you’re the Western Bagel Company.

The story of Western Bagel is a trailblazing tale.

David Ustin was working in a Bronx, New York bakery while attending school to become a rabbi. During his shift one day, he overheard a union representative say there were no good bagels out west. Soon after, David packed up and hit the road with a pioneer spirit and profits in mind.
When he arrived in California circa 1946, David keenly observed the cow pokes on the West Coast had different tastes than the Eastern customers he had come to know. He went on to develop a bagel that was softer and chewier which helped Western Bagel become

“The Bagel That Won The West.”

In 2002, amidst growing health concerns of consumers and if I'm guessing right… the rise of low-carb diets, Western Bagel created a reduced carbohydrate bagel.

Thus, the "ALTERNATIVE BAGEL" was born.

From the beginning, Alternative Bagels were offered in only two varieties, Country White and Roasted Onion. The bagel’s popularity spread like wildfire and now the company offers additional flavors including Sweet Wheat, Very Blueberry and Cinnamon Spice.

While I like bagels,
I LOVE, LOVE,
L.O.V.E
their English muffins!

I'm a thin and crispy pizza girl so it's really only fitting
that I prefer thin and crispy in the mornings as well.

And I'm just sayin' Western Bagel makes the meanest English muffin on the block. They have 2 varieties of English muffins; plain or wheat.

Have I mentioned that I LOVE these English muffins.

Not only do they taste yummy, they are only 100 calories! And their bagels are only 110 calories compared to the average bagel which packs a whopping 300+ calories. They have no trans fat or cholesterol and are a good source of calcium. Alternative English Muffins have 5 grams of precious fiber and will only cost you 1 POINT if you do Weight Watchers for a full English muffin or bagel.

I enjoy snacking on them in many ways. One favorite recipe is to toast & sparingly spread any flavor with Weight Watchers cream cheese over the top. We also love to spread peanut butter on the top for a protein packed breakfast to go. If you try the bagels, I like to toast a Roasted Onion Alternative Bagel, add some fat-free Dijonnaise and top with a few slices of turkey for a birdy bagelwich!

You can purchase these in refrigerated section of your grocery
{a.k.a. Wal-Mart in my neck of the woods}
next to the 101 varieties of cream cheese spreads.

They must kept cold to ensure freshness so keep'em frosty girls!

They are healthy, delicious, and a quick fix making them easily
one of my favorite things.

ENJOY

Fun Fridays...my favorite things

Poetry.

Here's one of my favorites...

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low, and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out
Don't give up, though the pace seems slow,
You might succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to the faint and faltering man.
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor's cup.
And he learned too late, when the night slipped down
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems afar.
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit,
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.

I needed to re-read over these words myself today! I hope they find their way to someone else who needs some encouragement today...

Fun Fridays....My Favorite Things

While holiday shopping
{well...we'll call it "shopping", truth be told I actually just
roamed the store, listened to the piano player and drooled over all the
uber-trendy, ultra expensive clothes that I would never actually purchase for myself}
at Nordstrom, I found myself in the hat department.

Not that I was actually in the market for a hat, but it was close to the area that had scarves
and I was in the market for a new scarf!
While browsing the hat department I actually tried on this little

I thought it might be my one purchase for the day {because I refuse to pay 40 bucks for a scarf}until I saw the $48.00 price tag...

Seriously...for a basic black knit cap?

Liked it, but kept walkin' girlfriends.
And, is it just me or is anyone else not interested in a cap that actually
says "Juicy" in bold black letters on the back. Anyhoo...

Fast forward 2 months.

We here in the heart of Texas have had A LOT of rainy days in the past month.
With all the damp weather lately, I'm sick
of wearing ball caps to hide this

hot mess

I call my HAIR.

Lucky for Target, I was perusing their aisles shopping for Valentines
goodies for my little darlings when I happened upon this little guy...

Hello CUTIE...

What's that, you cost $9.99.

Love IS in the air!

{photo credit}

She was the last one in black so I guess I'm not the only girl needing
another way to hide NOT fixing my hair in the mornings, but ACTUALLY look like
I just want to roll with my super trendy military cap!

I just love finding a good deal.

What's been your bargain FIND of the month?

Fun Friday...one of our favorite places

Boogie on over to
THE WACO CHILDREN'S MUSEUM

Needing somewhere to let the kids roam when it's 112 degrees outside and you've
played with every toy in the toy box 10 times already in one day?
Let me recommend heading on over to your local children's museum!

We had an incredible time playing, learning, and goofing off together, when we

visited ours a few weeks ago with Aunt Manda.

Two stories of non-stop, hands-on activities for your kiddos
and
seriously frigid air conditioning for the mommas!

Like I said something for everyone.

Fun Fridays...my favorite things

I turned on Good Morning America the other day, a RARE occasion for me, and caught the daily installment of a series entitled Dermatologist Secrets Revealed or something to that affect. The female dermatologist on the show that day proceeded to give various tips on what else????

Skincare.

Guess what her TOP "secret" tip was? Slather your face in layers of cold cream every night and pray hard....well not quite although that was my guess! The "top tip" from the expert herself was to wear moisturizer containing sunscreen everyday. She recommended choosing a 15+ SPF product. Even if your one of those people who says, "I never see the light of day except for walking to my car and back because I sit at a computer screen for 10 hours" either because that's your job or because you don't want to face the mountain of laundry, dishes in your sink, unmade beds, or little folks wreaking havoc in the playroom...she still insisted that even for the few moments you are outdoors the best long term gift you can give your skin is protection.

Of all the fancy schmancey moisturizer products on the market, I am still loyal to my college stand-by. An old drugstore find made by Johnson & Johnson called Purpose. It is oil-free, fragrance free, and has the Good Morning America's seal of approval 15 SPF all wrapped up in an 8 dollar bottle! What more could a girl ask for? Oh don't get me wrong, I'm sure one day I'll be on the cold cream and prayer regime, but for now I'll stick to Purpose!

Now it's your turn, leave me a note and share your favorite moisturizer, skin cream, or TOP SECRET beauty regime...

Happy Oil Free Friday

Fun Fridays...My Favorite Things

This holiday season is there a special teacher in your child's life who you'd like to say thanks and Merry Christmas to? If so here's a simple, inexpensive idea that would brighten any one's holiday! I originally saw this idea on Dawn's blog entitled "Testosterone Times Three," fun right?!?

You all know how this southern girl LUVs her monograms?!? Well here's a "teacher" twist to a classic monogram! This project totaled exactly $2 and 18 cents, but it's not the money spent that counts, TRUST ME!!! When I taught kindergarten some of the sweetest and most memorable gifts were hand-spun. Why...because you know that they put thought, time and personal touches into each one! I still have many of them, ready to pull out when my season of life calls me back into teaching!
Crayon Initial Supply List
- 1 black 5X7 frame from the dollar store = 1.08
- 1 package of Crayola crayons = 1.10
- 1 piece of card stock = free, we already own a stack
- glue gun
- Sharp enough to split a hair butcher knife
If your like me and couldn't make a letter outline to save your life, just type out a LARGE letter outline (a hollow font called AMH outline, in font size 340 worked for me) on your computer and pick out a cute font to add their name on the side of the initial. Print it out on card stock and use a super sharp butcher knife to cut your crayons to size. I glued mine down with a hot glue gun, allowing the glue to cool slightly after squirting it before laying the crayons on top, as not to melt them.
Make yourself a simple little card...I came up with a card incorporating the word CRAYOLA!
Tie yourself a fun bow around the package and VOILA...instant teacher appreciation gift, under 3 bucks!

Fun Fridays...favorite things

I love anything to do with design, decorating, and accessories. Give me magazines, stores, articles and websites! I will pour over them all! And if money was not an object, I'd have my home completely curtained, painted, and accessorized!! But back to reality...I'm a mommy on a budget baby and when it comes to decorating our home, I'm a bargain hunter! I will undoubtly find something I like while out shopping, but will I buy it? NO! I will wait till I shop around a little more and try to find the best deal! I am sort of notorious for this and it drives my Mom crazy! I can hear her now, Becky if you like it, just buy it. Sometime I should take her advice because as bad as I hate to admit it I have gone back to buy things and they've been gone...bummer! But most of the time, I check around and make sure it is really what I want, at the best price and THEN swoop in for the buy. Decorating can be a lot of fun
especially when you find a bargain because then, you can buy twice as much. RIGHT??!?!

These two little guys have been my favorite purchase recently. I call them my little chick-a-dees.

Do you see them?

No? Look closer...

These photographs are not in the best of lighting! How about now?

I love these little guys because they're so "purdy" and super versatile! I've already used them as toppers on my magazine stack. Next to my lamp on our living room in table and on my sofa table in our entry. Want to know the best part? I paid $6.00 for them BOTH. No, that's not a typo, SIX dollars total at my favorite decorating place Hobby Lobby! They were already on sale and I printed out the store's online coupon at their website and got an extra 30% off. I just saw a similar set in my last months edition of Ballard's Home Furnishings catalogue priced at $24.99! Oh so satisfying and one of my favorite things to nest on our mantle.
